Fisheries Management
Our staff of fisheries biologists, fish culturists and aquatic
biologists brings years of expertise and experience to upgrading
fisheries in private ponds and streams. Management techniques
include snorkel surveys, electrofishing, population estimates
and age distribution, and monitoring of aquatic invertebrate
communities. Our fisheries biologists have completed extensive
studies on the genetics and dynamics of existing populations
and how these populations can be successfully increased. We
make recommendations to improve habitat and manage fisheries
to maximize the recreational potential of streams and ponds.
Projects have ranged from long-term studies and management plans
to recommendations on the optimal fish species to introduce
into a specific pond or stream environment.
Hatchery Operations
Joseph Urbani & Associates, Inc. has considerable experience
and knowledge in the design and management of private hatcheries.
We have designed and managed hatcheries in Montana and Wyoming
that currently supply fish for private ponds, lakes and streams
in the area. In Connecticut, our company remodeled an old bass
hatchery and currently assists with its management. Bob Piper,
one of our associates, is considered one of the foremost hatchery
specialists and fish culturists in the country. His experience,
and that of our other biologists, aids in the management of private
hatcheries as well as the development of fish strains that have
broad genetic diversity and behave like their wild cousins.
