West Boulder River

Diversion Rehabilitation Project

Picture
(Pre-Construction)
The previous point of diversion consists of a headgate that is located on a side channel of the West Boulder River.  The side channel receives consistent flow from the main thread; however, it is perched above the main channel such that its flows are commonly too shallow to satisfy diversion requirements at the headgate.  To deepen flows at the headgate, a rock weir has been installed below the headgate structure.  During spring runoff, the side channel is chronically prone to sediment and woody debris accumulation.  The current headgate/weir configuration promotes that accumulation, requiring extensive annual maintenance.
The proposed project is designed to maintain necessary water surface elevation, ensuring water delivery to the irrigation ditch.  Construction of a stable weir structure is intended facilitate conveyance of both debris and sediment past the structure.  Relocation of the headgate to the channel margin is designed to remove backwatering that promotes woody debris accumulation.  The headgate will be realigned so that it does not impede natural flow paths along the bank.

(After Construction)
  •  Reduced maintenance activities water temperatures improving cool water refuges for trout

  •  Increased hydraulic potential for sediment transport

  • Reduced woody debris accumulations at headgate structure

  • Increased flows at hedagate

TESTIMONIALS

"In 2012 I hired Urbani Fisheries LLC to restore a section of river along my property. Today the whole aquatic system is better off and I have caught some of the biggest fish of my life. They use a holistic approach and work well with all the players to get the job done."
