Fisheries Enhancement From Design to Construction

WHAT WE DO

We are a family owned and operated design-build firm consisting of biologists, geohydrologists, ecologists, and fly fishing enthusiasts that utilize a holistic, nature based approach to enhance cold water fisheries.

As second generation River Restoration specialists, we’ve been at the forefront of active freshwater restoration for over 40 years. Our goal is to enhance, restore, and create biologically sound aquatic habitats from large rivers to small ponds. No project is too big or too small.

We strive to create biological entities that model nature and perform beyond our time, and we do so with passion. This passion has lead to the development of practical river, lake, and wetland restoration methodologies that are unsurpassed. From preliminary design, through construction, to post construction monitoring, our final product will always:
  • Increase habitat diversity
  • Uplift biological productivity
  • Appear natural
  • Require little to no post-construction maintenance
  • Have improved recreational access, handicap if necessary
  • Survive historically high water events

Cumulative knowledge of our team has taught us the field experience necessary for success. We have found that nature is the best model to follow when recreating an aquatic ecosystem. Utilizing natural aquatic structures and processes throughout design and construction results in a naturally beautiful and ecologically functional aquatic amenity. Because of this, it is imperative to consider all factors when restoring and constructing our fisheries aquascapes.

OUR WORK

For over 4 decades, we have worked with clientele in the Big Sky country and beyond, from California to New York. This is our life’s work, it’s in our blood, and we take pride in it.

When we connect with a client, we both work in-step from preliminary design, to post construction fine tuning and naturalization to ensure the best possible outcome for the ecosystem and the creatures utilizing it, humans included.

We don’t simply sell designs, submit permits, or move dirt. We look at each aspect of the project as a whole and work with you to understand your goals, and come up with the most effective, practical, and ecologically sound way to accomplish them.

Featured River Restoration Projects

Having decades of experience in recreating natural fish habitat, we consider ourselves pioneers in the field of fisheries management. Unlike our competitors' projects, we take the entire river's ecosystem into consideration when creating a lasting and sustainable piece of freshwater wetlands.

Check out our current projects featured in Montana and across the country to learn more about what we do and how our company's work goes above and beyond that of other fisheries.

TESTIMONIALS

"I can't thank you and the guys enough for your great work! I am so excited for the future of both rivers. We have made such an improvement to the habitat. I couldn't be more proud of the two projects! All my best."

-Michael L. Bateman

"In 2012 I hired Urbani Fisheries LLC to restore a section of river along my property. Today the whole aquatic system is better off and I have caught some of the biggest fish of my life. They use a holistic approach and work well with all the players to get the job done."

-A. Cooke (New Jersey)

"In 2011 the Raritan Associates, a very old fly fishing club on the North Branch of the Raritan river in New Jersey, contracted with Urbani Fisheries, LLC to do some major stream  habitat improvement  & restoration work on the stream. This work included deepening certain pools, building rock weirs and placing boulder clusters in certain parts of the stream to create pocket water generally increase aquatic invertebrate habitat. Joe Urbani and our club worked very closely with the Natural Resources Conservation Service with whom we had a WHIP contract to help finance this important work on the North Branch.

The actual work took place over about a ten day period during which time Joe Urbani and his top flight crew were on site each day as the restoration work was implemented in accordance with an approved plan. Urbani Fisheries built approximately 16 pools and used the spoils to build point bars for the purpose of narrowing the channel cross-section. Likewise, banks were stabilized with boulders and plantings in order to mitigate erosion.

During the entire process Joe Urbani and his crew were professional, competent, caring and thorough in all their work. The end result is a dramatically improved fishery and a restored trout habitat that has produced a superb fly fishing experience for our membership."
